STRAUSS, GUSTAVE LOUIS MAURICE

STRAUSS, GUSTAVE LOUIS MAURICE (c. 1807–1887), English author. Born in Trois Rivières, Canada, Strauss settled in England after serving as a surgeon with the French Foreign Legion and being expelled from France for alleged revolutionary activities. His works include Moslem and Frank (1854), Reminiscences of an Old Bohemian (2 vols. 1882), The Emperor William (1887), and various translations. The Athenaeum's attacks on his novel, The Old Ledger (1865), led to two famous libel actions. Strauss was well known in bohemian circles in London and was one of the founders of the Savage Club. He claimed to be of "Italian, French, German, and Sarmatian (sic) blood," and had no obvious connection with the Jewish community. He has an entry in The Jewish Encyclopedia of 1904, but did not receive an obituary in The Jewish Chronicle. -ADD. BIBLIOGRAPHY: ODNB online.
